On November 21st 2018, the first QuiremSpheres® procedure in Iberia was performed in Lisbon, Portugal. A patient, suffering from hepatocellular carcinoma, was successfully treated with QuiremSpheres® at Instituto Português de Oncologia Francisco Gentil (IPO) and Hospital Curry Cabral. This milestone was achieved through a fruitful collaboration between the Nuclear Medicine department at IPO and the Interventional Radiology department from Curry Cabral. The multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Élia Coimbra (Director, IR) and Dr. Lucília Maria Salgado (Director, NM), supported by Dr. Filipe Veloso Gomes (IR) and Dr. Maria Teresa Rézio (Physicist), performed the QuiremSpheres® SIRT procedure. The treatment was proctored by Dr. Maarten Smits. Quirem Medical congratulates the entire team on this major achievement.
QuiremSpheres® is the only commercially available SIRT solution based on the radioisotope Holmium-166. The unique properties of Holmium-166 allow physicians to perform post-procedural quantitative imaging of the microspheres to verify the particle and dose distribution. This patient case at IPO and Curry Cabral marks the first QuiremSpheres® treatment in Portugal.
“I am very happy to be able to offer QuiremSpheres to my patients” said Dr. Élia Coimbra, head of the Interventional Radiology department from Curry Cabral.
